How to Plan a Capability Video From Start to Finish

People often think making a video is mostly filming. It isn't. Most of the work is planning, and if you skip it, you find out in the edit: questions that didn't get answered, shots that didn't get filmed. Here's how we plan a capability video.
1. Be clear on what it's for
Is it mainly for tenders? Your website? Recruitment? Investors or a board? It can do several jobs, but knowing the main one shapes everything else.
2. Know who's watching
A procurement panel, a project manager, a future apprentice and a community group all want different things. Pick the main audience and talk to them. The others can get their own shorter versions.
3. Find the story in your people's words
We interview your key people first, then build the story from what they say. It keeps the video in your language, not marketing language. We'll plan:
- The key points about your business you want to get across
- Who appears on camera: leaders, supervisors, long-serving staff
- The work, sites and equipment that best show what you do
4. Schedule the filming properly
A good shoot schedule allows for:
- Times when the work we want to film is actually happening
- Site inductions, permits and any areas with special rules
- Light and weather for outdoor work
- When your people are available, without rushing them
We schedule enough time so nothing gets crammed into a short day.
5. The edit
In post-production we cut the story together, grade the footage, add your branding, music and captions, and send you a private review link. You get two rounds of revisions as standard.
6. Plan the versions
Decide early where it'll be used, so we deliver the right versions: a main video for your website and tenders, plus short square and vertical cuts for LinkedIn and other social media.
Common questions
Do I need to write the script? No. We work it out with you from the interviews.
How long does it take? Planning is usually one to two weeks, then the edit is usually two to four weeks after filming.
