How to Plan a Promotional Video for Your Business

Mark Giddens · 10 February 2026

A promotional video that works is mostly down to planning. Here's the simple version of how we plan one with a small business.

1. Decide what you want people to do

Call you? Book online? Visit the shop? Follow you on Facebook? Pick one main action. Everything in the video should lead to it.

2. Know who you're talking to

New customers, regulars, or other businesses? A video for locals who already know you is different from one for people who've never heard of you.

3. Tell a simple story

The best promotional videos are short and honest. Usually that means:

  • You or your team, explaining what you do and why you love it
  • Real footage of the work, the products or the place
  • A clear finish that tells people what to do next

4. Plan the shoot day

  • Have the questions ready ahead of time, so nobody is caught off guard
  • Pick locations that show the business at its best
  • Allow enough time for the interviews and the footage around them
  • Choose a day when the place looks right: busy if you want it busy, quiet if you need to talk

Nerves on camera are normal. We keep it relaxed, and if it helps we'll run through the questions once as a warm-up.

5. Plan your versions

Most businesses need a main video of 60 to 90 seconds for their website, plus 15 to 30 second clips for social media, in square or vertical formats.

Common questions

Do I need a script? No. We work out the questions together and build the video from what you say.

Can one shoot make several videos? Yes, a main video plus short clips for social media is common.
